I can't define it in easily...it's almost an addiction really. If I have a bad day, nothing perks me up like a strappy sandal or a nice pump. I have about 70 pairs of shoes...would have more but I gave some away. About a 50/50 split of casual and sensible footwear and dressier stuff for work/going out. I've had other women tell me that's too many so the shoe fetish thing is not a universal trait for women.
With shoes, it doesn't matter what your dress size is, they are always going to fit. It's a no-calorie indulgence. Who doesn't love it when Payless has their BOGO sale?

LOL great question. I do not know the answer but I wanted to through my 2 cents in. I do have a nice supply of shoes but not too many. Each pair I own goes for a different style of outfit and I only buy a new pair when the old ones are either out of style or fall apart LOL. My obsession is with my computer and my daughters. I think it's hilarious to own a billion shoes. I mean who really looks at your feet anyway. It simply has to be a fetish. Some people take anti-depressants and others buy shoes. To each their own. LOL!!!

like kessie, ARMY WIFE, & Lioness, I only look for quality, comfort, & shoes that would last for so many years that I wouldn't have to buy many other pairs... I also choose shoes that would match most of my outfits & I consider different occasions before I buy shoes... basically, I base buying shoes on the necessity & not its beauty (although I've been tempted so many times to buy wonderful shoes) and now I have 9 pairs... so I guess you really can't fit every lady in the category of "obsessed with shoes."
... I suggest you try asking Imelda Marcos. :)

I walk at least 4 miles daily, 4 days per week (home from the office), so I need several pairs of shoes to keep from wearing them out. Some days I walk 8 miles (to the office in addition to home from work), and on weekends I walk/run 6-8 miles of trails. I have walking shoes, running shoes, hiking shoes and trail running shoes. I have them in a variety of colors so I can coordinate with my work clothes, plus having multiple pairs means they last longer. I also have plantar fasciitis, so I have several pairs of things like Crocs for days when walking hurts. Again, I have several pairs that match my work clothes so I can be comfy at the office. I also have ventilated walking shoes and sandals for summer and insulated ones for winter.
Oh, and I have one pair with high heels, for job interviews. I've worn them maybe 10 times in the past few years. I hate those shoes.

If you wear above a women's size 10 like I do, there's not much chance to be obsessed with shoes. That's because the selection is much more limited. What especially gets me is that most shoes that size are too wide. Apparently, shoe manufacturers seem to think that women who wear larger sizes also have fat feet.

I actually don't have too many pairs. I'm all about quality, not quantity. I spend good money on the ones I get to make sure they are comfortable, look good and last for years. But then again, I hate shopping too, so I wouldn't be the right female to answer.

I think one of the reasons women like shoes is because they are an article of clothing that is very forgiving. It doesn't matter what your body shape is, you can wear and look good in a cute pair of shoes.

I like to have one of every style: pumps, ankle boots, rain boots, snow boots, knee high boots, trainers, flats, etc... and then I like to have variations in different colors, except for the raina nd snow boots. One pair of those is just fine.
Nonetheless, I wouldn't call it an obsession, necessarily. I'd say I'm into to fashion, as many women are, and so I like to look nice and keep up with the fashion.

Although a female, I don't obsess over shoes. Matter of fact, they have to be falling apart before I'll buy replacements.
