I am in the school library board. The school library's condition is not good. Books are mixed up, but i have taken care of that. the Problem is the design of the library is such that it is so congested. I need help for designing this place, but designers are out of my budget...also i need a program to process books so that we can have a record of reading materials we have. The old system crashed and has not been fixed for over 2 years. We need to really change the library but we need help and ideas...share your thoughts...

It's awesome that you want to improve the library. Do you have a librarian for the school. This is one of the first steps to be working toward. I suggest that you read the research paper from Scholastic, "School Libraries Work." http://content.scholastic.com/content/collateral_resources/pdf/s/slw3_2008.pdf It outlines how a good library really benefits the whole school.

You probably also need to seriously weed the collection of books. This is done to make sure the books are in good condition and up to date. You should weed materials with incorrect information or no longer relevant to the curriculum or needs of students. A good rule of thumb is no encyclopedias over 10 years old. No non-fiction that is over 10 years old unless it is reliable. For example, you can probably keep the dog books, but not the books about space.

Don't take junk book donations for the library. This will only drag the library down and cause you more work.

You can buy an inexpensive library automation system if your library is small. I used to use LibrarySoft when I worked in a school with less than 300 students. http://www.librarysoft.com

Take a look at my site, http://www.bellaonline.com/site/librarysciences, for more information on running a library.

I gave your question a star because it's such a good question, and because the benefits you will get from the many answers will help not only you but the many others who use the library.
1. Have a contest to design a program for tracking your books. The student who submits the best program can win a prize of some sort. You can take the program to a local college computer science department and ask them to debug and perfect the program for you.
2. Go to a college and ask them to help design a book tracking and monitoring program for you. The teachers may assign the project to one of their classes as a project.
3. Ask a local area construction firm for help in fixing the libraries cluttered spaces. You can get the students to participate.

i admire your dedication but part of being a good planner is accepting that you can't do everything by yourself.

the solution is to get volunteers. recruit people who feel the same way as you do about the importance of the library.

if you pool your collective talents and networks its easier and more feasible. if you can't afford to pay a designer perhaps you can get a designer to do his work for you for free..

good luck mate.

Ask all parts of the school community for their redesign ideas.

Fund raise for money to place then into practice.
