Just my two cents.

Hard is probably a "relative" word; depending in part, on your skills levels.

Then there is the issue of size and creating either cushioning, or the seat itself; which might be no more than 3/4 ply.

One thing that may have to be considered/ adjusted/ modified; is a normal; comfortable seating height. That might equate most to the current height of the foot board and modifying it; by cutting off legs; etc.

Certainly you can use CLEATS to support the seat; 2 x 2's as framing/bracing/ carriage or other style bolts.

No offense; but the issue might lie in your statement "I don't really know how to do this"

You probably should record all the measurements you assume will work; sketch out the planned result you want; create a materials list; determine the viability; and begin.

Certainly your notion is a good one.

It depends on the style of bed, just think of it as a wooden bench with an elaborate back and front.

Go to your nearest library and check out all the wood working books that you can get your hands on. This will not only give you some tips on how to build it but it is free to boot.

I saw an episode of "Decorating Cents" on www.hgtv.com where this was done. Check the website for the show and it will have exact directions.
