The above answer is pretty much true. In my expirience.
Linksys
Dlink
Netgear.
Pretty much all the same. make your decision based on price, but keep in mind the following:
at this point in history 802.11n not A B or G is the top crop in wireless. what you pay up front for MIMO (Multiple In Multiple Out) smart antennae technology is more than made up for in extended range and relyability. If you house is big, or older, and has Lathe and Plaster walls, you will spare yourself a lot of trouble and expense by getting one good MIMO router and skipping all the repeaters and high-gain signal boosters that come along with it.
If you like linksys, and there is no reason not to, then the WRT300N is a nice home model.
Some things to pay attention to:
1) You may not want a Router. Your cable or DSL model may have router capacity, and you don;t want or need two routers. If this is the case you will set your WRT300N as an "access point" which basically means it is not acting as router, just as a connection device. (Routers rout traffic around, and access points are just part of the traffic) This is not as complex as it sounds, and linksys has a good track record with documentaion and support.
To a name, these things are configures using a web based interface. They come out of the box with a default IP address, (ususally 192.168.someting.something.) and the interface is easily understandable.
If you have a two story house, try hard to mount your wireless access point on the second story and as closwe to the middel of the house as possible. You get better coverage from high up.
Good Luck

How big is your house and/or yard? The two Wireless to consider are Linksys G or N. G is for small to medium homes/yards, N is for the larger homes/yards.
Does you Laptop have a built in Wireless? Check to determine which is best. Most Laptops have B. If you want the match the router, you'll have to buy the Wirless NIC to go with it. G and N or both better than B when it comes to range. I know the Linksys G does support both B and G.
Ultimately, the choice is yours.

Funny. I used a Linksys for three years, even after I hacked the firmware.
Now I use a netgear though. It has pretty lights on it.
Netgear and Linksys has never let me down, dlink has though.. Buy a router and there will be good instructions with it.
