I use Firefox as my browser, but I still have Internet Explorer on my computer. Do I need to install all of the Windows updates and Service Pack 2, even though I won't be using IE as my browser?

Indeed. Some windows functions use IE. So you should ALWAYS have all the security updates. Heck, it's better to have the update and not need it then need it and not have it right?

Yes. Internet Explorer isn't the only weak spot in Windows XP. You certainly need SP2, and all the other security fixes.

Don't get lazy just because you're using a different browser.

By the way, don't take IE off your machine. You'll need it to run Windows Update itself. Firefox won't work. So keep IE patched also.

Hope that helps.

One tip I can give you, is that service pack 2 did me more damage than good. There are a few programs that I would have liked, (Safari for instance) but need SP2. I had to rethink which was better, functionality, or that program.

But then I quit using windows entirely, so I guess it doesn't make much difference now.

One other thing, you shouldn't have it auto update, because windows has a way of rebooting when it's done.. and it doesn't care how many hours you've been working on that project.

The windows updates affect many more parts of the OS than just IE. If you really want to take your time and dig through all the KB articles and determine if the patch affects you or not then you probably wouldn't be asking this question.

Best answer is yes. Set it to auto download and keep your system fully patched.

Yes. And once you are done updating, make sure that "Automatic Updates" is turned on. Keeping your computer updated on a regular basis is essential. That also applies to software like Anti-Virus, firewalls, and things like Ad-Aware as well. If you are using MS Office, its a good idea to keep that updated as well, as there are security updates occassionally which are always good to have along with service packs.
