So a couple of days ago, my boyfriend and I noticed tons and tons of these itty bitty red bugs crawling all over the floor by our front door. They are tinier then a pin head, a deep red color and have an oval shaped body. We thought we killed them but today they were everywhere! All over the kitchen floor, the walls by our front door and the floor by the front door. He has carpet so we can't tell if they are on there or not. Any idea what these are? Are they harmful? Do we HAVE to call an exterminator or can we get rid of them on our own? PLEASE HELP! I hate bugs and I am so creeped out right now. Thanks!

Also, when you crush them they are a black color.

You may want to have an exterminator come out. Neither chiggers nor spider mites are so big that you could see them on the floor while you're standing - and they should never swarm all over a kitchen floor.

Sounds like spider mites. Chiggers are invisible to the eye. Spider mites are not, but almost!

They have most likely come inside to escape the cold temps. which kill the majority of them off each winter.

They aren't harmful to a human or pet but they ARE harmful to plants and vegetation. Mites are species specific. So a mite that would feed off of a bird will not enjoy a human etc...

They suck the juices out of your plants and can eventually kill your plants. Go to the Home Depot or Lowes and get an insecticide to kill them. I would first try an insecticidal soap if you are finding them on only a few plants. This is the least harmful approach to the enviro.

Sorry you have to deal with the uninvited guests--best of luck!

hard to tell without seeing them but i doubt chiggers or spider mites go to www.whatsthat bug.com and see if you can see a picture of them. Once you know what they are then post back and we will see if you need an exterminator.

Most likely they are spider mites.

Information on chiggers: chiggers burrowing under skin is just a myth. "Chiggers are not equipped to burrow, and they are much too large to enter through the pores."
