Has anyone read the poem "my old man" by Charles Bukowaski? If you have could you please tell me the theme and exactly what the poem is about? Thank you very much.

The poem by Charles Bukowski is about a 16-year-old boy named Henry who grew up during the depression. His father seemed to be a mean man because his mother was scared that he would hurt their son. Henry loved to write stories and one day his father got ahold of them. They were scattered all over the lawn along with all of his clothes. When Henry got home, his mother warned him not to go inside because his father had read his stories. The boy confidently conveys that he could protect himself and even hurt his father if his father tried to hurt him. His mother tries to convince him to find another room as to avoid any confrontation. He eventually came back so that he could finish high school, and one day his father came into his room. His father held out some pages of a short story, handed them to Henry, and said "This is a great short story." Henry replied, "Okay," and read the story that was handed to him. The story was about a rich man who had a fight with his wife and decided to go get a cup of coffee in the middle of the night. While he was there he was observing all of the things around him. When he was through, he went to see his favorite horse, who kicked him in the head and killed him. Henry did not know what he was writing about but for some reason it meant a lot to his father. This brought Henry and his father closer because when Henry was done reading it, he let his father keep the short story. You can tell that they never became close friends because his last line is
I guess that's as close as we ever got."
This poem shows how hard the times were during the depression. People had short tempers because times were hard, and sometimes dads took it out on their sons. This poem is very straight-forward and I don't see any hidden meanings. You can see though that the son loved his father very much, despite his father being mean to him occasionally. You can also tell that his father loved him very much because he went out of his way to compliment the short story and even want to keep it.

I am as impressed with the poem as much as I am amused at the uselessness of the above comments. They just don't get how funny this is. Not only is the last line a complete surprise, when I read the last word it seemed better to stress the first and third syllables - and that made it sound even funnier. My only suggestion is to limit "hhe" to just one H.

His eyes shoot out like pipecleaners, (pipecleaners is not the best word. you can replace it with something equally revealing, but that which promotes nice rhythm) His skin is wrinkled now. (you can replace 'is' with a more meaningful verb) His world is shaking, Wonder waking, Lost among the crowd. The light shines, but hhe doesn't see, The voices dimly glow. They swing the knfe And end his life; He's just a potato. (the comparison is okay, it's just not to pleasing when you read it aloud. you can rephrase it or replace the word. it's up to you. well, no poem is perfect. goodluck!)
