1. What are the lights on the roofs of some pickups and trucks called? they are orange, small, and right on top of where the windshield ends. Look this truck has them: http://www.edmunds.com/media/reviews/top10/towing.vehicles/04.dodge.ram3500.500.jpg

And, are they only for looks or do they serve some sort of purpose? Well, thanks for your time.

Could I have them installed on a 1997 Explorer XLT. If so about how much would it cost?

The Ragman has it.....

Clearance lights are mounted on the top of a large truck to identify it's height and width. Marker lights are on the sides to mark it's length.

They are required by law on big trucks... some people put them on little trucks because they think they look cool.

Check out the website below....

Hope this helps...

Rag Man and Wired For Sound are right. They are clearence lights. They are required on vehicles that exceed a certain width and/or height by the dept of transportation. 1-ton dually trucks are required to have them because of their body width. They are optional on single rear wheel trucks.

They can be added to any vehicle. There are many aftermarket styles available, as well as being able to obtain a set of factory style lights that would be found on that particular make of vehicle.

They are called marker lights or clearance lights. All large trucks are required by the Dept. of Transportation to have them. Their purpose is to let you know a large truck is coming at you at night.

Commonly referred to as cab lights. You can get them at most parts stores or farm supply stores but they have to be wired in. They are just for looks on smaller trucks.
