Company Christmas party starts at 7:00, as does my second grader's holiday program...is it disrespectful to show up late for the party so that I may attend my child's function first? School program should last only an hour at most....thanks!

no. family comes first.
In fact you can skip the company party all together and make your 2nd grader feel like they are important to you instead of running off to a party the same night.

Just let the office know that they both start at the same time, you attend your child's first and be there right afterward. The family comes first and the company party will still be going on after your child's program is over. If you are supposed to bring food to the company party just make arrangements with a trustworthy co-worker to get them to take it to the party for you so that everyone there can enjoy it when they start eating. Remember that you are not the only parent in the company and everyone understands trying to juggle home and work. Enjoy both especially the program.

Merry Christmas.

No, it's OK, people will understand that you'll have many company parties but your child will only have one second grade holiday program.
However, you absolutely need to tell whoever or whichever department is planning the company party about this. Also you definitely need to tell your direct boss and main co-workers so they won't assume that you're being selfish, etc. on the night of the actual party. They can also tell others when they ask about you and you can be sure that some people will ask.
Plan ahead and spread the info around so you don't run into any problems.
Happy Holidays!

Kids always come first. There will be lots of company parties but only one 2nd grand Christmas program. Enjoy your family and if you have time stop by the office thingy. If you cant make the work party don't sweat it.

Happy Holidays!!

Yes, no problem. Just as long as you tell in advance that you'll be late because you attend first the christmas program of your child. That is understood i think. Anyway office party will last for hours while the school program, in an hour. We prioritize school program because maybe the child participated and needs for you to see his/her part in order to boost his/her morale.

Of course. But you should inform your boss, or the person responsible for the party, in advance. Simply say your child has a Christmas program and you wouldn't miss it for the world and you will arrive as soon as you handle that very important part of your life. Any decent employer will understand. And probably will admire you for it.

You should be fine, but tell the host/hostess (at many companies this would be the HR person ) so that they can prepare for you to be late. This way they can make sure that all the food isn't put away right before you get there, or that they don't just assume you aren't showing up.

i would go to your childs program first, at christmas time, family comes first, and it's not like your neglecting your responsibilities to the company, it's a party, you were invited, not obliged to go to it, in the first place. I'm sure they will understand!

I have three kids and they come before anything else. It's a party and it's supposed to be about fun, so I doubt anyone cares if your late. Besides maybe everyone will be having so much fun and be drinking that they wont even notice.

Just mention to a few key people, at your job, that you will be late due to your child's Christmas Play. Family is important.
