They sent me a notice, saying I owe $44. Well, when I 1st moved, they prorated my rent since I moved in the middle of June. I've been living here for like 5 1/2 months. Every time I ask for a receipt for rent, they always act snobby & rude.

& they say they don't have time to dish out receipts. They think that a copy of my check is a good enough receipt. I'm a Hurricane Katrina disaster recipient & I need valid receipts to continue getting rental assistance. Also, I'm on a low, fixed income.

Ask for a detailed invoice to show all your payments. Then, ask them why you owe $44. I am not sure what state your in, but the law says you are entitled to a reciept. Your money order reciept is proof, but a reciept from the landlord assures he recieved payment. Contact legal aide in your area. Don't let these people walk all over you. Kindly remit payment asap, and fight it later. No need to loose funding over $44.

I would also start considering finding ways to get a new place. Some low income landlords are just rude because they think you have no where else to turn.

Good Luck!

They should give you a receipt whether you pay with a check or not. They need to have something for their records (I assume they DO keep records); all they need to do is have a receopt book with carbons and you couild easily have a receipt.

As far as the $44, if you can afford it go ahead and pay it so that you are not delinquent and then fight them on it later. You don't want to give them any ammunition to use against you since they sound like jerks.

I cannot see how you could be $44 past due either. It sounds as if they have trouble with record keeping.

Put Section 8 in Google for your city, and see if you can come up with a more desirable apartment situation for yourself.

Pay in cash if you want a receipt where you live now. A check is ample receipt for payment. No one has time to write what's really a double receipt.

You did not say what the $44 is for. Yeah, Katrina is pretty much played out. You need to move forward from that.

I dont believe any landlord in any state in the nation can refuse to give you a receipt when paying rent. I believe its required by law in every state. And getting your check back is not considered a receipt, because you dont know when they will cash it.

If you give your state I will check back and find your laws. Im sure they are required by law to do this. In the meantime if you can afford the 44 dollars I would pay for it and fight them later. I agree with the other poster.

If you cant wait for me to look it up type this into google *tenants rights (state you live in)* Look for the government site. They are all listed. If they are denying your rights you can fight them. But dont lose your funding from katrina over 44 bucks.

God Bless and good luck.

I will check back and give you your state laws if you tell me your state.

It sounds bad but the rent is low. Get your check photos at the end of the month from the bank letter and save them . It sounds like nasty people running the place.
