The fact that his birthday is 2 days later should have no impact on his christmas gift. They are two seperate holidays and should be treated as such. It is not fair to him to give him less gifts just because of when he was born.
That said, you could get him a leapster for christmas and get accessories and stuff for it for his birthday. Then he could have an educational and portable toy to enjoy.

The best toys have not yet been recalled - that will happen two days before Christmas when it is difficult to go out and buy anything else.
If you don't have other children, you can make Christmas about a certain type of gift, and birthday another. Otherwise, I would say for a kid that age, get him some toy cars for Christmas, and then a Toy Car Garage or something to work with the cars for his birthday. Or the other way around.
Books are great too -- I always give a birthday book, and usually a Christmas one too.
Whatever you do, don't short him on birthday because of Christmas- especially if you have other kids. He will eventually catch on and feel unappreciated.

Get the kid two gifts, one really fun and the other meaningful or useful.
The Natural Geographic store has some really great toys that are both fun and educational. Books are great too.
Examples:
Really Wild Animals 5 DVD Set
Fly and Discover Talking Globe
Arctic Tale Children's Book

Instead of toys for his birthday, why not make it a day's outing to places he enjoys? Finish the day with birthday cake and a couple of small presents.

Our daughters b-day is on the 27th also. We just take a big christmas present and a small christmas present and give it to her. Or we just take her out somewhere and let her pick out her present. If anything if he doesnt have a turtle, hamster, or dog get him one if you are up to it. Or one of those ride around big wheels he can jump into

What ever you do... don't get him a combined present! Nothing worse than your birthday being "forgotten" amongst the christmas cheer!
