Why do you think today's managers must understand and utilize various motivational strategies?

Because not everyone has the same goal in life or in the workplace.

TQM and the theory of Empowered Employees lead many to believe all people are on the same track at work.

Managers must first make workers understand that the company and their job depends on the company survival in the corporate system. Slackers and thief's cost the company and then in the long run cost someone their job. Once managers get the base level of work ethics in place they can then work on motivational strategies for each type of employee situation. Some are there only for the paycheck and some are there for advancement.

It took me several meeting with my boss to make her understand I have NO interest in going up a management ladder but wish to advance in a technical side. Seems some bosses think everyone whats to be management for some reason.

because motivating people is job 1 in management. with more distant/remote employees due to telecommuting and with many generations and cultures in the workforce, everyone may be motivated differently and the manager has to know how to motivate every culture/gender/nationality/age of person.
discretionary effort is the gold that managers can elicit from employees.

Hourly employees have no motivation to upsell or do exceptional jobs if they are not the ones benefitting from it.
