Is this a new thing and will there be more Thursday games?

Thursday night games started last year when the NFL Network was launched. They help bring up the ratings so satellite and cable will carry the network as part of their basic cable programming. The NFL Network is currently fighting with Time Warner Cable because TWC refuses to include the NFL network as part of their basic package. Eventually I guess, the NFL hopes enough fans complain and TWC caves.

Well ESPN has been televising college football on Thursday for a decade now and so it is not new. I am not so sure about NFL having Thursday games although I know the have played on Thanksgiving since 1934 when the Detroit Lions started that tradition to get more addition as the Tigers got all the attention at that time.

It has nothing to do with Flex game. Thursday night football is something they have done from time to time, just hasn't been a Thursday night game of this magnitude, ever!

They only do Thursday night games deep into the season.

It's relatively new that the NFL has games on Thursday... they've always had games on Thanksgiving, and then Saturday games once the college season winds down.

Now that college has games on Thursday during the season, the NFL is filling that void.
