When you do look at a map of Egypt you will notice that the Nile river looks exactly like a papyrus plant in bud.
Now that is pretty amazing when you think that the ancient Egyptians considered the papyrus one of the most sacred plants.
It is a country of total contrasts a lush strip of
semi tropical greenery along the Nile and in the delta. the rest is desert and rugged rocky ranges with no vegetation what so ever.
The White Desert is one of the most beautiful places and the windswept white calcite stone looks like all sorts of fantastic animals and grotesque and beautiful creatures.

the answers given show wonderful links of photos of different sites in egypt.
i would like to add that egypt is a land in which you see desert and green areas, sea and river, old and new.
so, it combines a lot of contrasting characteristics in its landscape and in its population.
the people are interesting. they are modern conservative people.
modern in their aspect, conservative in behavior.
they have been religious since the time of the pharoahs. moslem and christians are fully dedicated to their faiths.
you are shocked by seeing the old and the new everywhere.

It's a river that flows through a desert. It also has a few Oasis' but that's about it. It was home to one of the oldest and most powerful nations in the world.
