Your doctor will tell you to put your feet in the stirrups and she'll ask you questions like "Have you ever had sex?" because if you haven't, then she has to use special tools so she won't hurt you. Just a warning, when she inserts the speculum, you might hear a clicking sound so don't get too scared about that. Oh, and when she does a pap smear, she'll use a q-tip to swab your cervix, but I don't usually feel that. It's over in 20 seconds.
I don't really have any advice other than to relax when your feet are in stirrups during the pap smear. Otherwise, it might help a little bit.

I know how you feel. I've had a similar experience. I'm 16, so really anyone touching me down there -- uncomfortable to the MAX! I had to have surgery this summer, and they brought in a Gyno. I'm still a virgin mind you, so I was very very scared. When you're in a doctors office, it's really more or less a very professional setting. I asked for a female, and it just seemed so much more normal. Mind you the finger up the bum...Lots of Lube, and a very very wet feeling afterwards. It wasn't pleasent at all! But when they're doing something, it's really just professional. The woman told me she's seen lots of vagina, and to her, it's nothing new. She said she chose the job for a reason, knowing what she was getting into. The gyno's are ususally very nice people! Also, another embarasing experience was when i went in for surgery! I was told I could wear my undies, and pants. After waking up...Everything was off! I was on the operating table, close to nude! I laugh about it now, but it was just so scary at first! Remember, after the inital shock, it's not so bad. (: I wish you the best of luck! It's really not as bad as they say it is! My Best friend had 6 Gyno's come in, and a couple med students because she has something wrong on her ovarie...Remember, it could ALWAYS be worse! :P

It's a little uncomfortable the first time you go, but the doc and the nurse are very good at helping you not be nervous. Why don't you get a female doc? That may help with your being uncomfortable, and women know what it's like and tend to be a little more gentle. The doc should talk you through everything he/she's doing while they're doing it. They will also tell you what they're going to do before they do it. Don't be nervous, just tell yourself that it's in the best interest of your health. As for the mammogram, you won't get one of those unless you ask for it, because they're not standard for women under 40, and you don't need a mammogram if you don't feel any lumps. Good luck!

Just last week, on Wednesday I went for my FIRST physical exam ever! It was weird, but went so fast and i was scared cause i get super nervous about things! I went through family planning, and I am almost 20, have unprotected sex and have had many partners. I went because I was having irritation down there and SCARED it was std, turns out I have bacterial vaginosis, A common bacterial infection in women. Anyways, do not worry! I sweear, I had an infection and they were just like oh, ok pass the salt, no big deal, they see it allllll the time!
ALSO I told the doct i had never had a pap before and she showed me what she was going to do first and then whiles he was doing it she told me what she was doing, and it only took a couple minutes. Just tell her it is your first time and you're nervous and you will be good as gold.

Sweetie you need to get your LuLu checked. Especially if you are active. You want to make sure you have not contracted a STD. Now don't get me wrong I am not trying to say your partner has anything but a lot of times things don't always have symptoms in males and then they clear up and they unknowingly infect women. It happens to the best of us. In addition you should want to know if everything is working ok. They check for possible cancer and or tumors. Be safe rather than sorry and once you get checked out unless you plan on having a baby you need to ask about protection and the different methods that are available for you. If you are afraid of that little bit you have to go through just imagine a baby coming out of there and you are going to have to see a OBGYN then.

Yes, you certainly need to go, especially if you are sexually active. Are you wanting a baby at age 19? Please do not have unprotected sex unless you are ready , financially and emotionally, to care for a baby. I personally feel more comfortable with a female gynecologist. Maybe that would ease your fears. ?? Good luck but please, DO see a gynecologist and start birth control. If you can't afford it, there are centers that can help you. More importantly, if you can't afford birth control you can't afford a baby. Just being honest!

Oooh...kay. Well, you'll open yourself to strangers, and you don't know who they've been with or what they might do to you... but you're afraid of a doctor that could save your life?
If you get an STD it could be a simple matter of an antibiotic. If you ignore it, it could be your life.
Relax and go. Try to think of the doctor as someone that couldn't care less about your past. Believe me, they see all types.

its extremely important if your sexually active to get an annual exam. it consists of a mamogram and a pap smear. it helps protect against cervical cancer and they also test your for common std's. if your uncomfortable with being touched request a female doctor to see you. just say its your first time and your nervous and she will explain every step of the process to you. all i can say is its better to get one than to not so good luck.
