I just got a job at a independently owned coffee shop in downtown Chicago. I was surprised that I did not fill out any paperwork following my hiring (but I did give my SS# on the application). I've been searching hard for a job for many months now and this is the only position I have been hired for. There are no breaks, but we can eat or drink whenever, I was told, but it always seems to be too busy. I don't mind the break thing too much, but the combination of the two makes me a little suspicious. I am more concerned with me being undocumented as a worker there, and possibly running into problems later if something happened. All the workers tell me not to worry, but the one with the most senority has been there 3 months.

Of course, I do not want to speak up since I was just hired and could possibly risk losing my job.

It is against the law not to have break. Contact the labor commission and they will tell you that.
Also you must fill out W2 forms in order for your wages to count toward your social security.
I would either talk to someone or get out of there.
good wishes,
Hope

It might not be a bad idea to wait a little while and then check with the SSA that they're receiving the Social Security payments that are being witheld from your paycheck.

Neither Illinois nor federal labor law mandate breaks. However, you should have filled out a W-4 -- that's mandatory.
