hi id like to know why the character frank burns left mash and where did he go?. also was it the idea of the actor who played him to leave the show or the writers. thanks.

The actor. He thought Hollywood was calling with bigger bucks. He later regretted his decision. Very much.
The same thing happen to the guy who currently stars on CSI Miami. He thought it was him who was popular rather than his character on NYPD Blue. He didn't work for almost 10 years and finally went on TV begging for forgiveness.; Viola, he was forgiven and given another chance.

The way I remember it Larry Linville felt he'd done about as much with the character as he could and wanted to move on to other projects. He was probably right. That character was more of a caracature than any of the others. They can only be developed so far. Larry did an admirable job with it.

My understanding is that Larry Linville found it too stressful to continue to play Frank Burns, as the character was so disliked... but he did a brilliant job. In the show, the character of Frank Burns was sent back to the U.S. and promoted to Lieutenant Colonel.
