So I went to my doctor and there is some concern that I'm not even ovulating. She ordered some blood work and for me to use ovulation tests. I used a box last month during my "peak" time to ovulate and did not get a postitive result on any of them. I've expanded the time period I'm testing over just in case I ovulate earlier/later then normal.

My question - is there any difference among the tests that are available? or does it not matter which one I get? Just how reliable are the over the counter tests? Is there anything else I can do to help encourage ovulation with out taking prescription meds? I'm afraid that I'm going to have to get a prescription, but I want to try everything possible first.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I don't blame you for wanting to exhaust all possibilities first. I know I certainly would.

As far as OPKs, they are all pretty much the same. For fun, you can go to PeeOnAStick.com and read up on some interesting OPK stuff. http://www.peeonastick.com/

A couple of suggestions from a pee on a stick girl... 1) It's important as to what cycle day you start testing. Follow the chart on the box. 2) Make sure you are peeing at the right time of day. First morning urine is OUT. Best time to test is mid day (11am-4pm). 3) Some women have a very short LH surge, so they have to test twice a day to catch it. You may find testing once at 10-11am and again at 4-5pm may help you to catch your surge.

The other thing I would recommend is that you chart your basal body temperatures along with using OPKs. Your temps will confirm that ovulation has taken place once you get your positive OPK test.

Do the OPK/BBT charting combo for a few cycles and see how you do. You just may find yourself pregnant :)

FertilityFriend.com has a really good online charting program that's free and easy to use.

All opk's are regulated by the FDA so they are basically the same, but some are more sensitive than others. Go here, www.peeonastick.com and look for the most sensitive one and try it. Also, be certain you are testing the right time of day--twice a day is even better, say once between 10am-2pm and again between 6pm-10pm. And be sure you are holding your urine for 4+hours and not drinking any liquids during that time.
One natural way to promote ovulation is soy isoflavones taken 5 days early in your cycle.

Buy the book "Take charge of your fertility". I bought it last month and learned SO MUCH about my body when it comes to ovulation. This is my first month of ttc, but I am not taking any changes. I want to know if I ovulate, when I ovulate etc. The book is great. I do not need any ovulation kit, because I am in charge.

my ovulation tests always showed that I was ovulating around the time i would expect to, later i found out that i in fact never did ovulate. Dont trust the tests get your doc to do a blood test on day21 to see if you ovulated!

It sounds a touch extraordinary to me, yet i'm useful it somewhat is not impossible. i could wait a pair greater weeks (whilst your era is think again) and take yet another try. whether that's useful at that ingredient i could bypass see a Dr. reliable success to you :)

I would think that just like a pregnancy test, you shouldn't be able to get a false positive. But, they are also more expensive than a pregnancy test, so I hope you can find a dollar store near you where they sell them (mine does! Dollar tree/store/general) they all usually sell the same things now I think.
Good luck!

I do ovulate, but that test didn't show it. I don't trust them. Your doctor can check to see if you are ovulating. I would just let him/her check you out. Good luck!

I had to take ovulation tests 2x a day to catch my surge, because it was very short. This websight helped me:
