I've been watching Good Times on TV Land, and I must have missed the episode where James died, what did he die from? And where did Florida go, leaving JJ to be the man of the house?
She just came back for Thelma's wedding to the football player, but I don't know where she went and left the kids alone, or why.

Clinkerbosox nailed it about John Amos (who portayed the adult Kunta Kinte in "Roots" a short while after quitting "Good Times".
Esther Rolle walked off the show part of the way through the following season complaining that the show was being centered around J.J. (Jimmie Walker) and the usual salary issues. The writers had Florida's gossipy neighbor Wilona (Ja'Net DuBois) look after the Evans family during this period,with Florida away to spend time with her relatives.

Went to Alabama to look for work and on the way back he was killed in a car accident. In real life he quit the show to work the movies.A real under rated actor.
