I am 26 and have lived away from home since I was 18....I talked to my Mom tonight on the phone (she lives in another state) and she said a police office rang her doorbell and asked if I was there.
My Mom got scared and just told the police officer I did not live there...He then said "Well, I will just send this paperwork back then." And my mom shut the door...(she didn't know what to do).
She said maybe it was because I have late bills....I have a school loan out in the amount of about $1500 and a way overdue credit card account but if you add it all up the total is under $4000....It seems pretty drastic to me to send the police for this.
The only other thing I can think of is during high school I had a older man that stalked me....I had to get a restraining order on him....although this was years ago, do you have to renew it?
I have not been in trouble....
So any ideas why the police knocked on my moms door? Thanks!!!

COPS (why is that capitalized?) dont come to arrest you when you owe money. It may be a sheriff. In some states they use marshalls or sheriffs to serve lawsuits. This sounds like a lawsuit. So the speculation that it's a suit on bad debt is probably correct. You were not served yet. They cant go forward until you are. If you have a contact, try to find out what it's about without giving up your location.

I imagine the credit card bill. Just call the sheriffs department and ask. They were obviously serving you some type of court paperwork. If you were really in trouble they would have wanted to know where you were right then! Even if its a credit card you can usually go into mediation and work out some type of payment plan without having to go to court. People do it every day. No worries.

If you sue someone, you have to serve the court papers on them. In many jurisdictions the easiest way to do that is to pay the police or sheriffs to do it for you.

If you have a "way overdue" credit card bill, they may have decided to sue you for what you owe. Would they have your Moms address as a 'last known' for you?

You should call them and ask what they need. Sounds like you were being served for something; perhaps credit related.

Why don't you just go and see what they wanted?? It's always better to face that stuff head on than run from it anyway.
