i heard that around the times of jim crow and segregation it was illegal to boycott certain things. can someone please clarify or give me a link where i can read more on it.

I'm new to this country and i'm ignorant of its history NOT stupid.

It depends on the law of the country in question, and in the case of a Federal country such as the US / Canada / Brazil etc on the laws of the individual States.

Since you didn't tell us what country you're in, we can't even guess what the grounds are for a boycott to be illegal where you are.
