On Earth, carbon is always present in living things. People, and every other form of life on Earth are carbon-based. We use other forms of life in fashioning most of the artifacts that constitute the material aspects of our culture: skins and plants for clothes, bones, skins and plants for shelter, plants and bones for weapons, bones and plants for eating utensils. Accordingly, carbon dating is extremely useful in dating artifacts from ancient cultures, up to about 50,000-60,000 years ago. It can't be used for anything older than that, however.
