After the 1960 season, the original Washington Senators moved to Minnesota and became the Twins.
In 1961, the American League expanded and added 2 new teams, including the "new" Washington Senators. This team lasted until 1971, when it moved to Texas and became the Rangers for the 1972 season.

There have been more than three:
1) Washington Nationals (current)
2) Minnesota Twins (formerly Senators)
3) Texas Rangers (formerly Senators)
4) Washington Nationals (1886-89 National League)
5) Washington Senators (1891 AA, 1892-99 NL)
That's five just in the two current major leauges. They've also had an American Association and Union Association team.

Minnesota and became the Twins. The current D.C. team is using the name Nationals which goes back to when they were a National League franchise before 1901. Also, when the second Washington Senators became the Texas Rangers in 1971, they kept the rights to the name Senators and that is another reason why the current D.C. team is called the Nationals.

The original Senators moved to Minnesota to become the Twins after the 1960 season. The AL then gave Washington an expansion team which were also called the Senators which stayed in D.C. until 1971 when they moved to Arlington and became the Texas Rangers.
