I think that the third answer hits exactly the right points.

I used to be totally against capitol punishment. I felt it was absolutely wrong to take a life, no matter what. But as I get older, I see that there are no absolutes and that sometimes, taking a life is the lessor of two evils.

I think that this problem can be separated into two sections. One: society has the right to impose laws and to enforce those laws for the protection of citizens, even if that means executing someone. Two: in the privacy of your own home you can teach and live any type of morality that you want. If you want to teach your children that capitol punishment is wrong, by all means, do so! Protest executions. Teach your children that ALL life is valuable. No one is going to stop you!

But people who murder have proven that they don't want to be part of a law abiding society. Either we put them in jail for life, at VAST expense to you and me and knowing that they COULD be released again someday, or we put them out of our misery.

I also think that if a judge releases ANY criminal and that criminal then commits another crime, the JUDGE should have to pay. THAT would keep the criminals where they belong!

Murder is wrong , but when one commits murder, in some cases they forfeit their right to exist in society and are executed. They committed the murder willingly and knowing it could mean the end of their life. They made the choice, therefore they are responsible for ending their own freedom and life. It is a just punishment for certain cases and also has the added benefit of guaranteeing that person will not be able to harm anyone else ever.

I wonder why people who oppose capital punishment always talk of the criminals rights and life? I never hear them talk of the victims or their families, and their loss and what they suffer for the rest of their lives. Who deserves your sympathy and protection more, innocent family members of violently murdered loved ones, or vicious, cold-hearted murderers with no conscience who hold no regard for the law or the lives of other human beings and who when released often kill again? Personally, I think a greater crime is committed if someone releases a person who already has proven they will commit murder into society and another innocent person is killed. If you don't want to be executed there is an easy way to accomplish that and its available freely to everyone in this society......don't commit murder!

There is a vast difference between cold blooded murder and an execution after a just and thorough trial by a court of law. Just as an individual has a right to defend him or herself, a society also has a right to defend itself against agressors of any kind, whether they be an invading army or a single person intent on killing innocent citizens.

Would you keep a dog in your house known to be vicious and uncontrollable? The proper thing would be to destroy that animal before it hurts or kills someone. Why would this principle not be applied to humans who have of their own accord lowered themselves to the level of a vicious animal?

Punishing someone for crimes that they commit is supposed to be a deterant to others so that they will not commit the same crimes. In a perfect world that would work. People are always going to kill people. Yes it is wrong but it is also a fact. It has been going on since the beginning of time. Nothing will ever stop this as long as there are two people in the world it will continue. People kill for various reasons. Some are justifiable others are not. We have to continue to punish people who commit crimes or this world would be in total chaos.

You are right: capital punishment isn`t working. There have never been more murderers than today. Locking up murderers is a much more humane act which identifies a civilized society and sending the signal: we are not like you. Capital punishment is simply hate and has never prevented anyone from killing.
