Okay heres the deal see if anyone might be able to help me out with this. I have a 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo and It has 3 break lights one in the window and then 2 on the back of the car. The 2 break lights on the back of my car will not work I have had someone look at it and they cannot figure it out. We have tried the fuses and the bulbs there both fine and they still do not work the one in the window works but the 2 on the back do not work I have no idea what else maybe this could be if anyone might know please help my car needs an inspection this year to be legal and I can't get it inspected when those 2 break lights do not work.

I am an automotive electrical technician and generally whenever I see this, the turn signal switch is bad. See, the third (middle) brake light is operated directly off the brake lamp switch but the other outer two must run through the turn signal switch to allow the lights to flash even when the brakes are applied. I believe this is where you will find your problem. It takes approx. 1.5 hours to replace and the switch is going to be around 100.00 or so. Good luck!

Do you dash board lights work? If you did not know there is also a fuse under the hood for theses lights check that one. I had a 1996 and the fuse block had a corroded wire on the bottom side that cause the tail lights and dash lights to go out. if this is the case the whole fuse block is a huge pain to replace and will cost a lot. What I did was dis connected the 2 wires for that fuse and went to the auto parts store and picked up a in line fuse holder and spliced it to the wires that went to the fuse box and installed the same size fuse then they all started to work again. I hope this helps. I had no idea that my tail lights did not work but I knew the dash lights where out and just dove it this way for a while before someone told me about my tail lights.

The most common cause of this, especially if the car has a tilt steering colunm, will be found under the dash at the turn signal switch PLUG. The wires flex with every tilt of the steering colunm and eventually break. The break is usually found at the plug .This wire should be a white wire. When it breaks the rear brake lights will not work but the center high mounted stop light will.
I seriously doubt this not to be accurate but if it is you'll need a turn signal switch.

you need to re check that you have the rite bulbs you may have picked up the 2 wire bulb insted of the 4 wire bulb you probally have a bad soccet bord that the lights plug into i see it a lot some times you can clean them but mostly you swap them use a test light to find where the power stops
also test the grounds

turn on your hazard lights do they work if no make sure there off that will make them not work also

Those bulbs should have 2 filiments in them .... turn on your head lights and your hazzard lights at the same time. Do your back lights blink? They should ... if they don't you probably have the wrong type of bulb in there.

The bulbs in the center brake lights are not interchangable with the ones on the tail light assembly.
