We recently found this caterpillar crawling along the drive way. We havenever seen anything like it and the kids wantto know what it is, We put it in a bug catcher with some grass and it seems to be forming some sort of web around the grass. it is actually starting to look like a cocoon. when he is spread out, he is probably about 10015 cm's long and about 1.5 cm's in width. he is very hairy and looks like he has spikes on him. he is mostly brown but has these yellow dots on his back. his little legs look like little suckers. Does anyone have any idea what it is?

Hi Bec. I'm not sure what type it is, but I found a great site for identifying Australian caterpillars. It's http://www-staff.it.uts.edu.au/~don/larvae/faqs/ident.html . It's not a typo in the website address - the '-' after the www is meant to be there. I'm guessing you are in Australia, so hopefully that site will help. If you click on the links beside the pictures of the caterpillars, you will see more pictures of similar caterpillars.
Best of luck.

Caterpillars are really hard to identify. Your best bet is to let it continue to form a cocoon and when it emerges look in a butterfly book or check out a web site. I recommend whatsthatbug.com and bugguide.net. There may be better ones if you are in Australia
