4 answers

2x + 24y = - 176
-44x - 24y = - 160------ADD

- 42x = - 336
42x = 336
6x = 48
x = 8

16 + 24y = - 176
24y = - 192
y = - 8

x = 8 , y = - 8

2x + 24y= -176 => 2x + 24y= -176
-4(11x = 6y= 40) => -44x- 24y = -160

-42x = -336
x = 8

2x + 24y = -176
2(8) +24y = -176
16 +24y = -176
24y = -192
y = -8

final answer: (8,-8)

you don't add the equations until you have made one set of like variables have opposite coefficients. I would multiply the second equation by -4 to get a -24 on the y

2x + 24y = -176
-44x - 24y = -160

now add
-42x = -336
x = 8

the subbing 8 in for x in one of original equations, find y

multiply 2nd equation by -4. then add the equations.
-42x=-336
x=8
plug in 2nd equation to get y
y=-8
