A vernal pool is a temporary, standing body of water. Its primary input would be rainfall, but could also include runoff and river flooding. The main output is evaporation. I'm less certain about the throughput and sinks. I think the throughputs could include amphibian and insect life; the animals arrive and their life cycle progresses in the pool, and then the animals depart. The sinks might include absorption of water into the ground.
