The information you need is called "the nitrogen cycle".
Bacteria play a necessary role in this cycle . Four kinds of bacteria are involved: Bacteria of decay, nitrifying (nitrite/nitrate ) bacteria,
denitrifying bacteria and nitrogen-fixing bacteria.
Lightning also plays a small role in the cycle.

Hmmm I'm not sure this is quite 7th grade level but here's what I know::
Amino Acids & Nucleotides ---(ammonification)--> ammonia ---(nitrification)--> nitrite ion ---(denitrification)--> nitrite ---(denitrification)-->nitric oxide ---> nitrogen ---(nitrogen fixation such as lightning)-->ammonia---(used by plants)-->amino acids! back at the top again...
