Just recently, about 5 or 6 people have told me that if I like Pink Floyd, I would like Porcupine Tree. I've never heard anything from the band but I seem to hear nice enough things about them so...
I'm going to go out on a limb and buy one of their CD's. If you could recommend a goodie, please do so.
Thaaankyou.

Thanks for starring Dani

Well, it depends on your taste.
The Sky Moves Sideways is my personal favorite, and I find it the most find Floyd like. It's title track is pretty long, quite a trip, and slightly mellow. Steven Wilson's obviously very David Gilmour inspired in his guitar solos.
Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet lean more towards metal, so if you don't like metal, it might be the wrong cds to start with.
In Absentia, Lightbulb Sun and Stupid Dream are the easiet to like, they're shorter songs that are pretty catchy.

So take your pick and happy listening :0)

EDIT: Wow, I can't believe there are so many reponses... Yay!

You will. You will. You will.

Sarah C, no doubt, was one of the recommenders? She has an excellent taste in music.

Anyway... Signify (the album I've gotten from them) is very Floyd-esque. The guitar on it is not unlike David's style. It has fun gimmicks and sound effects- most notably, some guy's Christian ranting at the last half of the CD.

The organ on it is mostly soft and groovy, and the bass is pretty prominent, though doesn't go through to a bass solo or something ridiculous like that.

Just try and tell me this doesn't sound a bit like Floyd. Sure, they're a bit more modern, much more abstract, and do more vocal harmonies (which I love about them!), but they definitely have some 70's influence.

Oooh, I love Porcupine Tree! Try In Absentia.... for sure! Or go on iTunes or Amazon and listen to the samples to get a feel for which album you like best.

I'd start with In Absentia. This is bias because this is when I started. Of course, if you are looking for a more Floydian connection, stick with The Sky Moves ... and Up the Down Stair. Signify is the perfect balance between their really-prog and more-rock phases. Stupid Dream is their "The Bends" (Radiohead).

"In Absentia" is their best CD to date in my opinion. It has some heavy stuff and some really mellow, melancholy stuff too. Very good and a great place to start. After that "Deadwing" and "Fear Of a Blank Planet" are great records by PT.

Sarah C is the expert though....

In Absentia is a fantastic album. All the songs are different and all of them are great. My favorite tracks from the album would are "Blackest Eyes," "Prodigal" and "The Creator Has A Mastertape."

I'd go with the Deadwing album.
Lazarus is definitely the best song on there. Sample it on iTunes to see if you like it.

I've been wondering this too.

But I've set my mind on Deadwing. Lazarus is just... amazing.
