That sounds like a good idea especially if it's discolored.
I know it sounds ridiculous but my friend's fingers started going numb and it turned out that something was wrong with her spine--she had to have surgery and everything. This wasn't caused by falling down the stair but my point is that you might have caused less apparent injuries.

Yes you should get it checked out even if its just a hair line fracture it can cause terrible pain and on the long run if you do not get it fixed when you get older it will turn arthritic and painful I know I broke my pinkie toe and now it thinks its the weather man lol

If it starts to swell and does not stop hurting, then yes. I once fell down the stairs and broke my toe.

yes. you probably broke it, and thumbs are the only finger that needs to be put in a cast if it is broken. i broke a finger last year and it was never put in a cast. it still hurts today. you should get it checked out.

If it is not swollen and it works ok, then you can probably just get a finger brace and keep it immobile for about a week to see if the pain gets better. If swelling or brusing, then get it checked by a bone specialist.

Did you bruise your thumb. Sometimes bruises don't show up on the thumb.
