WoW is a pretty typical MMO, where you pick a race/class, level up, gaining skills along the way, and have access to all of them at once. You then spend a lot of time farming bosses to get better equipment for your character so you can then beat the next boss who has even better equipment. Groups go as large as 25 people (originally was 40, but this was toned down for the less hardcore gamers).
Guild Wars is not truly an MMO, as the entire world is instanced. When you leave town, the only player characters you will find are players in your group, until you get back into a town. Leveling is not a focal point, as you'll get to the max level of 20 before you finish the story of a single campaign (many say that level 20 is only the beginning of the training of your character, as you'll likely not even have 1/3 of the skills for them at that point). Human is the only race you can play, but you can (and may as well, since there's no negative effect) dual-class. You don't bring every skill you have with you into battle, though. You can only bring 8 skills at a time with you into a combat area; figuring out a set of skills that works well together is a big part of playing well, so part of the battle is won or lost before you even set foot into a combat area. Max party size is 8, though there are PvP battles in Factions that are 3 teams of 4 on each side. If you can't or won't fill your party up with players, you can bring NPC teammates with you as well, though they aren't terribly smart and they only bring 4 skills instead of 8. While perfect equipment is still just as hard to come by as in WoW, good equipment is much easier to get.

That's not really true.
WoW is a true and traditional MMORPG. Only dungeons are isolated, so you can encounter anyone anywhere else. This means WoW runs on big servers that can lag when high demand hits or in crowded areas. You can equip and use every skill your character has at any time, and you will frequently change equipment as improvements become available. WoW has a craft system where characters can make their own items. There can be high demand for resources, since people are competing for them directly.
Guild Wars is all instances, only towns are not. You can not run into a player character outside a town unless they left town in your party. This helps reduce, but does not eliminate, lag from game play. There is no character crafting in GW, it is all done by NPCs. Guild Wars limits you to only 8 skills at a time, so individual skills are a lot more important. Respecing though is completely painless, because you are expected to do so. Changing your skill and attribute points (the closest equivalent of WoW talents) is completely free and can be done in any town. Health and Energy regeneration is also MUCH faster in Guild Wars, eliminating the after battle sit-down many WoW character's need. That also changes the dynamics of battle since the requirement isn't to reserve energy for the next fight like most casters in WoW, but to balance your energy regen against your energy use. This is balanced by a near total lack of healing and energy potions. In fact there are much fewer items in Guild Wars than in WoW, and few of those items are disposable.
As far a community goes, I do think WoW has the better community on the whole. Since you can meet character's outside of town, friendships are more likely to be established and maintained.

guild wars is free to play online after you buy the game. World of Warcraft on the other hand is 15 dollars a month plus the cost of the game and if you want the expansion.
i personally like WoW better than Guild Wars, i've played both before.
