You must have a broker/dealer sponsor you. You do not have to be a direct employee of that company, but it does make things more complicated. An example would be if you worked for a bank or credit union, but a broker/dealer (say Merrill Lynch for example) could hold your registration and licenses. The broker/dealer would not do this unless you were engaging in activity warranted by your profession. Check out www.finra.org as they administer and track these licenses.

Unless your employer is willing to sponsor you, I doubt anyone will.
