First of all, is it broken. If you think so, you need to go to doc or get one of those little finger crutch things so it wont move. It takes a couple of days for the throbbing pain to stop. If you smashed your nail, it will probably fall off too. Go to a clinic, they can help you out.

At this point, you'll need to put heat on it. You put ice the first 24 hours to minimize the bloodflow to the area. The tissues are damaged and will leak into spaces where they wouldn't ordinarily be. Then after 24 hours, the tissues are starting to heal and you want to bring blood carrying nutrients for healing to the area. You increase blood flow to the area by applying heat.
Motrin is an anti-inflamatory drug and will help with pain and inflamation.

shut your other hand in the door to even out the pain so you have matching broken fingers on each hand

Go to doctor, if you don't think its broken though then just keep icing it, it takes a while.

I did that once-it throbed for days. Yours sounds like you may have broken it. Best to see a doctor.

Get some Voltarin (diclofenac) from your pharmacy. This is a good anti inflammatory drug which should do the job.

Sounds like it is either fractured or broken. You should pay the ER or your doc a visit asap.
