Baseball needs to introduce a salary cap before this gets way out of control.

I am a Red Sox fan and I am enjoying my team winning titles, but there really does need to be a salary cap.

Meanwhile...how does Becket, Santana, Schilling, Dice sound for a short series rotation?

I do kind of object to people saying that the Red Sox just buy players and don't use their farm system. If they get Santana, it will be because they developed Ellsbury, which allows them to move Crisp. The deal I just saw written about on ESPN is a good deal for the Twins, too, if they really can't afford to bid for Santana on the open market. They get Lester, a new Center Fielder who isn't a major downgrade from Hunter, a top triple A prospect and one other player. They can still be a contender after losing their Ace. But overall, I agree with people who think the competive balance is way out of whack. It is. If it wasn't something as trivial as Baseball, I would feel guilty enjoying it. But I suffered for years as a Sox fan, so I can't help enjoying it now. But I have to say, I enjoy the Pats a lot more, knowing that they are on a completely level playing field.

I hadn't even mentioned that Beckett only came to Boston because we developed Hanley Ramirez, one of the very best young players in the major leagues, so I'm glad to see somebody else did. The Yankees don't have an Ace like that because George would NEVER move an offensive stud like Ramirez--he's too obsessed with putting together a fantasy lineup. But like Boston, the Yankees do have a great farm system, and it's why they can constantly re-load. There are other teams out there with similar amounts of jack to spend, they just don't do it as intelligently as Boston, and to a lesser degree, the Yankees do. At the same time, there isn't a level playing field. When the Red Sox have a bigger pay roll than the Indians and Rockies combined, there is clearly a problem. Theo and the rest of the brain trust are geniuses. But like any true fan, I'd be curious to see how Billy Beane might match up against them if he had the same war chest. I'm actually confident enough in the Red Sox organization that I'd welcome a salary cap. The Sox would still be contenders.

im just tired of the yankees and red sox
they dont buy all the good players, just a lot of them, but the angels, dodgers, mets and orioles all have large payrolls usually, even the mariners dont have a small one, but i get really tired of the attitudes of boston and new york, as if they are the only teams in baseball that matter, i hate those teams all right, but more than anything im tired of bostonians and new yorkers, and the band wagon jumpers that follow them

They're not picking them up off of the free agent market though, they're trading players that they drafted and turned out to be high quality prospects. It's guys we get like Papelbon,Ellsbury(who by the way hit over 400 in the World Series),and Pedroia who come up through the system and win you a championship. Not to mention Youk(also drafted) won a gold glove over at first. You can't tell me that is buying great players. The Red Sox got one of the best pitchers in baseball and the world series MVP for Hanley Ramirez, who is now an all-star. It's the player development doing the trick. Even the Yanks have Cabrera,Cano,Joba, and Hughes from the draft. It's just great scouting that's netting them the talent to offer for trade bait.

Only tired on the Red Sox part. The Yankees can keep whoever they like, hehehe

I wish my team ( The Dodgers ) would get big time players like A-Rod, Cabrera, Santana but if they don't spend the money on them or don't pull the trigger on a trade that's their fault. The reason those teams you mentioned get those players is because they are willing to spend and trade players they compete against each other so much.

It can get kind of annoying after awhile but then again that's what any good team does is goes out and spends the money necessary to compete and try to win championships.

I agree thats why you see Boston winning 2 world series in the past 5 years because they have money to spend while other teams have to use their farm system.

Good answer, Dane. But what happens when a couple of teams are so dominant that the fans quit watching?
