Usually in places that don't show, or that can be covered easily. Many women cut their legs, above the ankle, and upper arms. Sometimes even their lower abdomen. As for how, it just depends. I've used razor blades, exacto knives, broken glass, and even mechanical pencils. I was a VERY destructive teenager.
As for why, well I can only tell you why I did it. I did it because I thought I deserved it. It was punishment for doing something "wrong." When I ate too much, got a low grade, etc. I would cut myself.

Because when a person has severe depression, or sometimes schizophrenia or other mental illnesses, you're in so much distress inside your own mind that often people feel it helps to ease that distress by experiencing physical pain; often they can feel that physical pain is an easier dealt with distraction from all the confusion and hurt mentally and emotionally.

Or sometimes a person in the same condition will hate themselves for feeling that way, they will feel that they are messed up or "broken" or wrong and that self-hatred can fuel self-harm.

When you ask "how" and "where" it worries me. You're not thinking about harming yourself are you? If you are, DON'T DO IT. It's more harm than good, I know you might not feel that way at the time you're doing it, but trust me, it's an addictive habit just like drugs and you can seriously hurt yourself or even die because of it. For an alternative to cutting, try writing down what you're experiencing in a journal, or drawing on yourself in the place that you would cut, or cranking up some music real loud. If you're experiencing depression or other troubles, you can message me and I know websites and places where you can turn to for help.

It can get better, I promise.

To completely answer your question, as for the how and where, usually use a razorblade and make a small cut on the inner arm not too close to the wrists.

The most common places people cut themselves are on the arms, thighs, and sometimes inside of the arm. They do it because it is a way of coping with pain and a method of control. When somebody says something mean to you or hurts you then you will feel pain. This kind of pain is not controllable because if somebody wants to hurt you they will. You can't stop them. Cutting on the other hand is different. YOU get to decide whether or not to cut yourself therefore you feel that you are in control of your pain. Also feeling pain makes you take your mind off all other things besides the pain. If you are in emotional distress you will do nearly anything to take your mind off the hurt you are feeling. You get to pick whether or not you feel pain so you feel more in control of your life. It's all about control and I don't know why some of you are kidding because cutting is a serious problem and usually depressed people do it. Depression IS a mental disorder.

I've only done this once. It was the most horrible thing that I have ever done and have regretted it for quite a while.

I was so depressed and unsatisfied with myself that I cut a name into my arm that summed it all up. The meaning of the name was desolation. That scar nearly summed me up for the next 5 months while it healed. I had to wear longer sleeves during the summer and although, less than a year later (I guess I am lucky, or didn't cut as deep as some) it's nearly gone.

Any time I am emotionally hurt, I feel the urge to do it again and usually gravitate towards the sharpest object in the house. Last time, I was so angry and hurt... sometimes the physical pain of hurting would almost make the emotional pain feel better... but it's not worth it to do that to yourself in the long run.... I kept thinking that over and over, and wanted to cut so bad. I walked out side and stabbed the nearest tree again and again until my knife was bent and ruined. It worked for me. It was the best emotional release ever. I don't really suggest it, but it's a better alternative than hurting yourself. I haven't cut since. For some reason, I've tried to talk about my emotional problems occasionally as they happen to my loved ones so that it doesn't build up like that. At the same time, I am trying not to hurt them. It is a win-win situation. I am hurting them less, and not hurting myself.

My advice... find someone that hurts worse than you, perhaps a terminally ill patient your age, a paralyzed victim of on accident at a rest-home, etc. I don't know why, but this eases your pain while healing them as well. It's nothing that can really be explained, but the best way to heal your hurt is by reaching out to others in love.

"emo" people don't cut themselves. Emo is just a style and a music genre. It's nothing else. I have many emo friends and they don't cut themselves and I used to be emo. Now, if you're thinking about people who really cut themselves, there are many reason why they are cutting themselves. Rape, abuse, bullied, pressure, etc. People cut themselves feel depressed and put down on. They don't feel like they deserve to live and to have a crap life so they cut themselves hoping they would die.

I dont know why. But they cut them selves on their wrist with the most veins which is often on the side of where your palm is. My friend and my cousin cut themselves and I try to stop them but they say "I like cuttmy myself". I would never cut myself.

it can be a way out. to let pain out to inflict pain upon yourself. its a very hard thing to hide. some people cut their wrist or arms while other poeple cut a place that they think is dirty. because they believe something that they have done is dirty when really it could be nothing all that bad. its a illness and it can be helped.
