What do you think about the jailed UK teacher in Sudan?

KHARTOUM, Sudan - A British teacher in Sudan was convicted Thursday of the less-serious charge of insulting Islam for letting her pupils name a teddy bear "Muhammad," and was sentenced to 15 days in prison and deportation to Britain, one of her lawyers said.

Gillian Gibbons could have received 40 lashes and six months in prison in the case if found guilty of the more serious charge of inciting religious hatred and given the maximum penalty.

Its just political game-playing. More about Brit-Sudanese political maneuvering than religion.

I've already read and heard about this story, and I find it ridiculous! In America, a person would not be jailed for naming a teddy bear "jesus" or something like that! But, in Sudan, people do not have the same rights to freedom of religion as people in America do. I dont not agree with her sentence at all, even though it follows in the laws os Sudan. If only every country on earth let people have as much freedom as America...! Also, I believe that today the world is too politically correct. Yes, I have strong opinions and no, I am not afraid to show them. I live America, a great country where people have freedom of an unimaginable level compared to other countries. But you have to stop and think, what is this world coming to that people get so offended over trivial matters? I mean come on, jailed for naming a bear something that "offends" other people?? In this day in age, "political correctness" has been taken too far. This is my personal opinion on this matter, and thank you giving me the chance to express my opinions here.

I just heard that her verdict was guilty of insulting Islam

Her sentence is 15 days in jail and she will be deported, but she will NOT be whipped.

In the words of one Moslem cleric; “It is clear she meant no insult to Islam.”
I can’t say it better than that, she should never have been brought up on charges and it was only the reaction of radical Islamics who fear that their religion and culture are under attack.

Candy: So that means if you hear someone say "God damn it" they deserve 50 lashes as well? That is a huge over reaction. What is next the death penalty for jay walkers? Hitler would love that kind of attitude.

When things like this happen it only makes the fear and hatred toward those of Islam even worse. The moderates feel that this situation should never have come before a court. The school should have quietly taken her to the side and explained her error. They may have had grounds to fire and deport her, but by taking it to court and making it an international event they only proved just how dangerous radical Moslems can be.

So Candy and you other radicals answer this question how can naming a bear Mohamed be a crime worthy of 40 lashes, when a criminal who happens to have the name Mohamed is not considered to be an insult to Islam. Shouldn’t his parents be given 40 lashes for defaming Islam, by sticking that holy name on a criminal? Hasn’t that person disgraced Islam? Shouldn’t the use of the name Mohamed be illegal because clearly the person named Mohamed is not the profit? Isn’t the simple act of bestowing that name on a mere mortal a crime? Shouldn’t we take ever Islamic person named Mohamed and stone them to death? That is what you thinking leads to, that is how foolish it looks to Westerners and that is the extents were are scared that you are willing to go to. If you are willing to do that to your own people then it is impossible to imagine what you would do to Christians and other non-Moslems.

Luckily the reasons behind this foolishness are more political than religious and luckily only a few radicals feel that way. However, those same kind of radicals are currently seeking nuclear weapons in Iran. For me that means the only way to treat them is to nuke the entire nation back into the stone age for the sheer protection of the rest of the word. Does that sound radical, does that sound right? Or does it sound like a fool is speaking? You may call me a fool for saying this, but I am a forward thinking fool who is looking at where Islam is being lead by a radical few. Things like this should be a warning to the moderates that your religion is leading all of you down a road to destruction. The way to stop it is to denounce acts like this and to stop them.

The fact that people only quietly denounced it and that a legal court made this ruling scares me and shows me that the only safe way to handle Islamic radicals is nuclear sterilization. I think that the cure may be just as bad as the crime, but if Iran gets its hands on a nuclear bomb then we may not have the luxury of making a choice.

Better than 40 lashes, but the whole thing is a show anyway. THEY knew it was an innocent thing. Those who are involved just like violence. Using something like this to punish someone who ISN'T from your country is an attention grabber. The kids who NAMED the bear were Muslim. They knew it wasn't allowed, yet they did it. The most popular boys name in the world, IS Mohammed. How was she supposed to know that would be offensive? It was nothing more than the old Salem Witch Trials. She could not have escaped all punishment, because if you let her slide... you must not be a good enough Muslim. What I mean is...by making her the scapegoat...the parents and the school can show the world and their own government, just how 'devout' they are.

Cool you brought this up. I was doing a report on this in class. I believe that the UK teacher does not really deserve it. This is getting so much hype because the teacher was working for a private muslim school and the rich parents just want to start trouble. The school is not helping much because they can care less about the UK teacher since they want to make more money from the private student's parent.

It just reminds me that I am very lucky I live in the United States of America!!!!!!
And to think there are people trying to make the world follow those laws!
I wonder, Mohammad is a very common name in the Muslim world, I have met many.
If someone named Mohammad does something wrong are they punished for what they did and for insulting the prophet Mohammad? That would mean anyone named Mohammad that does something wrong would have to be sentenced to death under Islamic Sharia law for insulting the prophet.
Reason number 1 to convert to Islam...Right

Muslim people keep trying to put across the message that Islam is a very tolerable religion and they keep wandering why nobody appreciates Islam and Muslim people and they do try and change peoples view of them being "terrorists" and "bad people"
But then they go ahead and pull something like this that is just SO ridiculous. Thats where they get this bad image from. English people are going to remember this for a long time and hold it against them.

Not to be rude but don't we have better things to worry about than what some teacher and her CHILDREN named a teddy bear!?
Seriously who cares what the bears name is.
We should give whoever is throwing a hissy fit over it 40 lashes for being a retard!

It's a sad situation brought on by the Muslim leaders, not all muslims think this is just! - I would think that this publicity would bring muslim leaders to re-think their rules, but in all honesty they won't. They really are in the dark ages and need to recognise the difference between tradition and real life today...

Since it seems to bother them so badly, perhaps we should airdrop millions of rolls of toilet paper, with the image of Mohammed printed on it, throughout all parts of the Middle East. That would drive em nuts, if they can't handle a Teddy Bear.
