The Puritans celebrated the birth of Jesus, but not the Catholic "Christ Mass." Since the date of the birth was (and is) unknown, the Puritans chose to ignore the Catholic tradition. An English Catholic in the 17th Century was regarded as a potential traitor in alliance with Catholic France or Spain, so celebrating the Christ Mass was potentially dangerous.
