Let d be the number of dimes that Jose has
Let q be the number of quarters that Jose has

He has a total of 17 coins, so

d + q = 17

He has 9 more dimes than quarters, so

d = q + 9

Use the second equation to substitute for d in the first equation. Then you can solve for q. Put that result in the second equation, and you'll obtain the value of d.

To check your answer:

The amount of money he has is $2.30
