I think I may have the answer. All five players you have mentioned have captained teams for parts of three decades.
Mark Messier became Oilers captain in 1988 (and served until 1991). He was Rangers captain from 1991-1997, and again from 2000-2004. In between those stints Messier was Canucks captain from 1997-2000.
Ray Bourque was named Bruins captain in 1986. He served with honor until 2000, when he was traded to the Avalanche.
Steve Yzerman was the longest serving NHL captain in league history, serving from 1986 through his retirement in 2005.
Ron Francis was named captain of the Whalers during the late 1980s. He served that post until his trade to Pittsburgh in 1991. Francis served as Penguins captain two different times (when Mario Lemieux sat out the 1994-95 season and when Lemieux first retired in 1997), in 1994-95 and in 1997-98. When Francis made his return to the Hurricanes (formerly Whalers), he served as that team's captain from 1999-2004, when he was traded to the Maple Leafs.
Finally, Mario Lemieux rounds out this impressive list, as he was first named Penguins captain in 1987. He served from 1987-1994, then again from 1995-1997. When Jaromir Jagr was traded to the Capitals in 2001, Lemieux was named team captain. He served again from 2001-2006.
I hope this helps.

They all have ears?
They all won the Stanley Cup.
All of their names were misspelled on the cup?
They were all scouted by LITY but none played for the Blackhawks.
They were all better than Brian McCabe?
None of them ever scored on their own net?
None of them has ever heard of Jude?
