depends what state, most states do the safe haven for babies where you can leave and no questions are asked. And in the usa if you have a child and are under 18 you are considered an ADULT. Although you cannot make medical choices for the babys untill you are 18. I left home at 16 and had a baby (that I kept) I was concidered an adult.

This is a simple case of stupid. After all the bill was paid. The boyfriend could have paid the bill anyway and she could have gotten the medical care she needed. Now she's in pain. Oh well. Take an Advil. If her intention was to abandon the baby that would be a different situation. I am under the understanding that if a woman gives birth and does not want the baby and intends to abandon it or "dispose" of it in some way she is encouraged to bring it to a hospital, police station or even fire department rather than a dumpster or leaving it somewhere to starve or freeze to death. Yes she did use the facilities of the hospital to give birth but I would hope the aforementioned would apply to her as well and she would not be prosecuted. In this particular situation if the boyfriend had not paid the bill and she was reunited to with her child to live "happily ever after" then I feel that would be wrong and illegal. Work out a payment plan

Sounds messed up to me. Sounds like (from the spelling of your words) and what she did, that you all are not very mature. I would act a bit more grown up with this question by spelling things right since this sounds like a serious offense and you want people to take you seriously. How can you pretend to leave the hospital. You either leave or you don't. I would think that in the eyes of the hospital, she abandoned the child. There are professionals at hospitals that could have helped her out with this situation and had her do it in a lawful way.

This is a tragic situation, where a young mother feels forced to leave her newborn baby because she lacks support and proper treatment from her family.

I think the authorities would be concerned about your friend's health, and about her baby's health. I don't think she'd be in trouble with the police. Nobody can take her baby away from her.

She should go back and feed her baby, as the milk will stop coming if she doesn't put the baby to her breast, and the little one needs that special nutritious mother's milk! It also needs the special love and care that only its mother can give it, and your friend needs to give that love to her baby.

If your friend doesn't go back and love her baby, she will suffer psychologically, and will regret it for the rest of her life.

As for the abusive family, she does not have to live with them any more, and she can get help from a social worker to start a new life with her baby.

They can not MAKE you stay in a hospital for any reason, unless a cop is guarding you. They want you to sign a release form so they don't get in trouble, but they can't make you do that either.

She can leave if she wants to. Also, the state will cover the bill if she cannot cover it - all states do this under Sobra Medicaid. I would imagine there is a lot more to this story.
