I was told after my ultrasound that my baby might have one of these. I refused amnio and am now waiting for the blood test results. I am keeping the baby. If the blood test shows I am really in a high risk for DS or ES, is the delivery going to be any different?

You can definitely have a natural birth with a Downs or Edwards baby. My 3rd child had Charge Syndrome which causes severe heart defects and my vaginal delivery was perfect with no complications and she was under no distress.

Because a Downs baby has a risk of major heart defects, and therefore a chance at having some distress at birth or breathing difficulty, they will have a neonatalogist present.

Just keep an open mind and realize that emergency care might be needed, but is definitely not set in stone.

All the best to you!

You can still delivery vaginally under normal circumstances, but it would be considered a high risk birth, and they would likely want to have a neonatology team present at the birth. They may also want you to push and attempt delivery in the OR, just in case an emergency happens so they can do a c-section quickly and not have to move you from another room.

Good luck!

Generally, the delivery is no different other than the location. Because DS babies often have heart and kidney problems, you may deliver at a hospital with a Level 1 NICU. It is my understanding that ES babies (also called Trisomy 18) die within the first year, most within days of birth.

I'm not sure... I wouldnt think so... but your doctor will definatly warn you... good for you for keeping the baby no matter what... I refuse to get those tests done... but for some people its a good idea just to be prepared...
