Water in vacuum chamber. Room temperature, will it boil and freeze and the same time? I am guessing yes

1. It boils, since pressure goes down. Evaporation takes place rapidly and hence boil. Plus temp and pressure are directly proportional.

2. It freezes, water is boiling at room temp. no external source of energy, hence it looses energy constantly, and freezes, as there is no longer energy to keep binding the liquid.

What does really happen?.

The vapor pressure of water is relatively high so, in a vacuum, where there is no air pressure to "hold" the water molecules in liquid form. It evaporates and very rapidly (which is what happens when it boils). When materials go thru a phase change, from solid to liquid or from liquid to gas, there is energy involved, called latent heat. As the water evaporates, it takes energy (latent heat) from its surroundings. This is why sweat cools you off in the summer. Since there is no heat being added, the evaporation cools the water that is left. If there is enough water, the water cools to the freezing point before it all evaporates.

Boiling is what occurs. It is a common practice in the refrigeration industry to place a system in a vacuum to boil all the non condensables (water) out of the system.

I am relatively sure that the boiling overwhelms the freezing, and hence, water will only boil, though try to freeze.

Water will not exist in a vacuum chamber, hence the question is not valid. Vacuum means there's nothing in the chamber, no steam, no water, no ice.

i think you are right. but, if it boils and freezes at the same time it will cancel eachother out so maybe nothing happens.

It will become harder to freeze and easier to boil.

I dont know but you should get the water out of it or you wont be able to apply your brakes
