you are trying to determine the greatest common factor of two numbers. the second number is a multipule of the first number. what will the greatest common factor be? explain

It will be the first (smaller) number.

The reason is that all factors of the first number will be within the second number. Thus the greatest common factor will be the first number.

For example if you had 4 and 28, the GCF is 4.

P.S. For similar reasons, the lowest common multiple will be the second (larger) number because the factors of the second number "cover" the first number as well.
