If Steven F is right - and he probably is - I spend more in one year then the median family makes. Anyway...back to your question. I beleive I read somewhere that the savings rate in the US is now in the negative numbers. So if the median income is $42,000/yr then the median amount spent must be $43,000.

There is NO SUCH THING as average. The MEDIAN income in the US is around $42,000. That means 1/2 the households in the US have incomes above that amount and 1/2 have incomes below that amount. Incomes are generally classified in quintiles.
The lowest 1/5 is the first quintile, etc. 90% of all households are in a different quintile that they were 5 years ago.
