Hill End and Sofala are two amazing old gold mining towns just near Bathurst in New South Wales - they are worth visiting even if you don't get to pan for gold.

Quite seriously, almost anywhere. There are plenty of old goldfields in every State and Territory where a pan in any creek will yield results. I have panned for gold on the side of a dirt road in the Williamtown area in South Australia during a rain shower and have picked up some flecks.

If you want to make a fortune gold panning, you won't - anywhere. But if you want to find some gold in the pan, find a nice shady creek with some water and pan the inside of a bend. Good luck.
