Transition metals are the ones in the middle of the periodic table, they transition between the left side (having an electron to share) and the right side (next to the inert gasses) which would like to have an additional electron.
Metals are defined by the way they conduct electricity, if the electrical resistance increases with increasing temperature and they are not a semiconductor, they are metals.
Rare earths are the Lanthanides, the upper of the two rows included on the bottom of the table.
Actinides are below the rare earth, these are radioactive elements including U and Pu.
Nonmetals are the elements which are not metals and are not semiconductors, they do not conduct electricity.
