two percent in a sexually reproducing population. In case you're wondering what else is there, think amoeba where the percent would be even less.

Why are you asking this question? There is no simple answer to this question (which is why you are getting a lot of silly answers). The answer is complex for a number of reasons. For example, as a scientist you would define a particular probability of survival and a length of time over which that probability will be calculated. The probability will also be greatly affected by a number of ecological and genetic factors which must be specified.

However, as a rule of thumb, a minimum viable population size (the term for what you describe) is several thousands of individuals.

I don't know how interested you really are in the question, but there is considerable literature on the subject (a fair bit written by me). Google minimum viable population size and you will see what I mean.

It really depends; some animals can go through a population 'bottleneck' of surprisingly small numbers and rebuild - hopefully we're seeing that with some of the rarer whales, and occasionally an 'extinct' animal returns from the dead. Others for one reason or another need rather larger populations to maintain viability - Passenger Pigeons are usually regarded as one of the classics there; they appear to have needed the presence of lots of their kind in order to keep up a good breeding success. If that's the case, they just fade away as the older ones die and too few younger ones come replace them. It's pretty difficult to put any general numbers to a rule, as there are so many potential factors involved.
