She's told me its hard for her to speak in "Tugalog" but she can sing in Tagalog fluently......I don't get it? We talk to her in Tagalog, we watch Wowowee and MMK together so she can understand the language. Any tips to get her to start talking to us in "Tugalog"?

franz: she's only 4. at home, english is her primary language; her dad is white. when she goes to her lola's house, tagalog is the spoken language there. there's not a single child in her preschool who could speak tagalog-they're all non-filipinos.

i understand where your daughter is coming from....i speak ilongo fluently because i spent my childhood in bacolod (my dad is from manila but learned how to speak ilongo fluently) . when my family moved to the states, we spoke ilongo at home. as i grew up i learned to sing in tagalog and even read in tagalog because of family friends who spoke tagalog that would come over. as hard as i tried, i couldn't hold a conversation in tagalog. my syllables and words were jumbled and i was made fun of alot and i also got both ilongo and tagalog words mixed up. it's so easy to learn a song because all i have to do is memorize it. reading in tagalog is also a breeze but to this day, as an adult, i still can't hold a conversation in tagalog although i understand most of it. a lot of filipinos i come across, especially those older ones who just moved here from the philippines, frown upon the fact that i can't speak tagalog even when i treat them with respect.
i suggest you still keep watching all the filipino shows with your daughter and always converse with her in tagalog. even when she responds in english, just be patient and continue on with it. maybe one day, she'll catch on to it.

Well, songs are fixed and repetitive and can be easily memorized with time, without a person necessarily knowing the meaning of the words or being more fluent in the language it is in. That explains why she can sing in Tagalog but finds it hard to converse in it. Children learn faster when they are having fun, and you don't necessarily have to "force" the fun in. Songs are a good start, and, depending on the lyrics, it could be fun and funny to make it a game to sing originally Tagalog songs in English just for kicks. If she likes stories, tell her stories and get her storybooks in Tagalog. Find out what she likes and creatively try to integrate your "lessons" in it.
Take her to a fun place in the Philippines, nothing beats immersing yourself in a culture to learn a language. Speak more and better Tagalog yourself, as a role model. The only way to help a person learn a language is to keep her practicing it.

singing is just repeating I remember my time in the PI there were people who could sing great, sound a lot like the bad but when you spoke, they didn't understand a word. Talk in Tagalog and encourage her to answer in both English and Tagalog.

just keep talking to her in tagalog. make tagalog the only language spoken at home. don't worry about her english...the neighborhood kids, the TV and the school system will take care of that.
when she wants something (like milk or some toys) and she asks for it in tagalog, praise her and give it to her (otherwise, don't!) that's how reinforcement works - per suggestion of one of the answerers.
keep at it. you'd be glad you did. and she would too later on. i should know. i was raised this way.

Try talking to her by singing. That way she answers back in Tagalog by singing.Would that be exciting? You are like in the set of The Sound of Music.
And also try to watch Eat Bulaga instead, she would not learn anything from Wowowee.

How old is your daughter? If she can't speak in tagalog, how does she communicate with you, in English? Maybe it's her favorite song, that's why she can sing it fluently. If she goes to school now she can speak Tagalog with her classmates.

What language does she speak then? The "Tugalog" says it.
Rewards work for children. Reward for every kind of effort she does in speaking Tagalog. Of course, don't give rewards at once. Read on reinforcements and interval under psychology.

Continue talking to her in Tagalog. When she talks to you or asks you questions, answer her in that language. In time she'll learn how to speak in Tagalog.
