you can estimate anything you just might not be very close

Hmm, I think so. This is gonna sound weird but i think they get an estimate from the amound of light from the galaxy. These measurements shows that about 90 percent of the mass in the galaxy and universe for that matter can not be seen with modern equipment

it's possible.. first figure out the mass of an average star.. then multiply that number by the number of stars in our galaxy.. you'll get a pretty big number.. ;)
